California’s plentiful sunshine ensures a consistent and long grape growing season, which provides flavorful fruit with layers of character from which our winemakers create distinct, expressive wines. To craft Hess Select Pinot Gris, they identified vineyard sites producing grapes with approachable acids and balanced fruit notes, the ideal foundation for this crisp, bright and inviting wine.

taste + style
We fermented our Hess Select Pinot Gris in stainless steel, without oak influence, in order to accentuate the beautiful tropical fruit characteristics of the wine. It undergoes some lees stirring to build body and to highlight the naturally bright, crisp stone fruit flavors. Ripe pear and apricot aromas lead to flavors of pineapple and cheerful citrus, which are complemented by a fresh acidity. Very balanced on the palate, this is a wine truly easy to enjoy.
Vineyard + Production
Vintage 2017 began with restorative rains that replenished soils, helped support vine growth and fortified our vineyards through the Spring. Harvest began normally with yields looking promising, but a late-August heat wave that continued into September caused harvest to pick up at a rapid pace. October was marked by wildfires in the North Coast, and while the fires devastated many homes and properties, much of the area’s grapes were already picked with the majority of the state’s vineyards not significantly affected. Despite it being a tumultuous year, most saw an abundant harvest with above normal yields that gave our winemakers quality fruit and the opportunity to develop wines with depth and character.
Food + Wine Pairing
Our Pinot Gris tastes best served among good friends and delicious food. Pair this fruit-forward, versatile wine with your favorite grilled chicken or grilled vegetable dish, or simply enjoy it alongside fresh shellfish with a squeeze of lemon.
